Earlier this week, the Queensland Auditor-General released its report on Queensland level of bushfire preparation and preparedness, finding that government and organisation planning efforts to reduce community risk exposure requires further emphasis.

Jensen Bowers’ senior town planner and bushfire planning specialist, Laura Gannon was called upon by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) in her role as Chair of its Environmental Planning Chapter to comment on the need for further concerted efforts in the area of responsive bushfire land use planning.

The 2014 UDIA State Excellence Awards celebrate Queensland’s contemporary knowledge, skills and innovation in the urban development industry. The awards recognise the best of the best; the people and projects that go beyond the built environment, to create wonderful communities.

The Village Coorparoo developed by The Village Retirement Group was awarded the best ‘Seniors’ Living’ as well as ‘Medium Density Development (Large)’ for 2014.

The Village Coorparoo is located on Cavendish Road and was opened in February 2012.

Central Village developed by Metro Property Development was named a finalist in the ‘Urban Renewal’ category, and Eastwood Apartments developed by Pellicano Pty Ltd also earning finalist status for ‘High Density Development’.

Winner of the ‘Wildcard Award’ was Creating Gateways – The Toondah Harbour and Weinam Creek Priority Development Areas developed by the Redland City Council and Economic Development Queensland.

Last year, Jensen Bowers gained development approval from Council for a learning facility at Sheldon College.

Today the team at Jensen Bowers is showing their support for the enduring commitment and dedication of Queensland’s rural fire service crews and volunteers, by wearing a Yellow Ribbon.

An initiative of the Rural Fire Brigades Association of Queensland, Yellow Ribbon Day is about raising awareness and showing your appreciation of the 35,000 rural fire volunteers who dedicate their time to protect and defend their communities.

This very worthwhile cause marks an event-filled week which focusses on raising awareness for a range of emergency and disaster awareness. Yesterday was International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (13 October), and this week is RACQ Get Ready Queensland (13-19 October). RACQ Get Ready Week and RACQ Get Ready Day are celebrations of the resilient nature of Queenslanders, whilst raising awareness for emergency and disaster awareness and preparation. Check with local councils for activities throughout the week.
